Born Julia Veronica Brandon to George Washington Brandon and Emily Cecilia Gould Brandon in December 1912 in Butte, Montana. George abandoned his family and Emily had to turn her over to the state. She was adopted by Rev. Walter Benjamin Reed and Desiree Carey Reed in December 1913 and grew up thinking 1913 was her birth year. She was a registered nurse, physical therapist and teacher. Jane married Dr. Alphonse Charles Smuda in 1939. Together they raised two daughters and three sons.
