He was an architect who was best known by the name H. Edwards Ficken. His career included many distinguished commissions including his service as Supervising Architect of Woodlawn Cemetery during the years 1913-1929. He served as a major in the New York National Guard.

Henry's first wife was Josephine Hubbard Ficken who was the mother of his two daughters. She may have died as the result of complications of childbirth.

Henry's second wife was Mary Beck Goddard Ficken (1841-1920) whose place of burial is unknown.

Henry Edwards Ficken was the maternal grandfather of actor Fred Gwynne (1926-1993).

The Ficken family marker does not show the name of Henry Edwards Ficken but it does show the names of his mother Emily Coles Ficken and that of his sister Emily C. Fincke.
These people were all born in England but Henry's father, whose place of burial is unknown, was born in Germany. The Ficken family name may have previously had a German spelling of Fincke. Census records indicate that Henry's sister Emily never married. It appears that she adopted the German spelling of Fincke for her surname.
