James Perry Stump, first son of Leonard Stump 3rd and Mary Morrow Stump, was born about 1823 in Hardy County, Virginia (now West Virginia). Other siblings born in Virginia: Mary Jane b. 1825, Elizabeth Jane b. 1826, and Phoebe b. 1830

James Perry’s parents moved to Missouri soon after 1830, as their last five children were born in Missouri: Sarah Pauline b. 1833, Amanda Mary b. 1836, Thomas Benton b. 1840, Gideon b. 1843, and Dorcus b. 1847.
