I believe that Elenor "Elen" Carter was the oldest of nine children born to James Carter and Mary Jane "Polly" Waugh. Supposedly, she was born on 11 Nov 1826, however, I have found no documents to prove that. Her obituary and headstone both list her age as 67 and several census records support an 1823 birth year. An 1873 deed from Putnam County, Missouri, lists Elen and John as heirs of James Carter.
Elen married John Centers on 8 Mar 1846 in Gallipolis, Gallia Co., Ohio, and they had eight children:
William H.; Mary L.C.; James Wesley; Elizabeth J. (died young); Sarah Jane; Nancy Ellen; Eliza Jane; and Hannah Maria.
There were several Carter families in Gallia County, but James and Polly Carter moved to Harrison Township, Gallia Co, Ohio, and then to Putnam County, Missouri, at the same time as Elen and John Centers.
