Rita Mary Grandlich, who worked with her husband, Joseph W., for nearly 25 years at Grandlich Jewelers in Hales Corners, died of natural causes Friday at Froedtert Memorial Lutheran Hospital in Wauwatosa. She was 76. Grandlich was a secretary, homemaker and school photographer before joining the family jewelry business in about 1976. She was a salesperson, bookkeeper and jewelry buyer for the store and continued working until three weeks ago.
Joseph Grandlich Jewelers will be remembered by some as the place where the large two-face Seth Thomas clock stood on W. National Ave. between S. 35th and S. 36th streets from the 1920s until 1960. When the city widened the street, the clock was taken down.
The business was started by her father-in-law, also named Joseph, in about 1906 in West Allis. After World War I, the store reopened on National Ave. and the younger Joseph grew up in the business.
That's where he met Rita Jonas. She was born April 26, 1923, in Milwaukee to Caroline and Bernard Jonas and was a graduate of Bay View High School when she began working as a secretary for U.S. Steel. She walked into Grandlich Jewelers one day in 1943 with a watch that needed repair. Joseph W. fixed it for her, a friendship evolved and they were married in 1947.
After the children were raised, she returned to the steel company as a secretary and then became a photographer, snapping class and individual photos for students in the metropolitan area. After that, she was secretary for the Wauwatosa East High School principal for seven years.
When the Grandliches bought a store in Hales Corners and closed the National Ave. shop, she began working at the new store.
She is survived by her husband, who lives in Wauwatosa, and four children, Sister Carol Ann Grandlich and Thomas, both of Milwaukee, Joan Rebholz of Madison and Joseph of Richfield.
The funeral is at 10 a.m. today at St. Pius X Church, 7500 Wright St., Wauwatosa.
