It is with sadness that we share news of the death of Margaret Rose Phillips, née Mason. Margaret passed on July 1, 2015, at her home in Naples, Florida, after struggling with breast and bone cancer for the past few years.

Margaret was born on July 20, 1932. She graduated at the top of her class at Detroit’s Cooley High School, class of 1950. She accepted a scholarship from Michigan State University, where she met her husband, Robert Rolfe Phillips. They married on September 6, 1952 and graduated together in the spring of 1953, prior to his entering military service.

Margaret worked in the General Motors Legal Department as a stenographer. She then worked, following graduation, in the Personnel Department at Michigan State University until she could join her husband who was posted at Camp Carson, Colorado. She worked in Colorado Springs as a legal secretary. After military service, they returned to Hastings, Michigan, where she began teaching school in nearby Freeport, Michigan until her first child was born.

In 1957 her husband joined the Bendix Aviation Corporation in St Joseph, Michigan. After ten years, they began to move to various locations where Bendix had operations. The family lived in Denver (Colorado), Western Springs (Illinois), Rochester (New York), Springfield (Massachusetts), Southfield (Michigan), and finally to Sidney (New York). Upon retirement, they bought retirement homes in Naples (Florida) and Mason (Michigan).

While raising a family, Margaret is, first of all, credited with being an especially good mother. In addition, she involved herself in numerous worthwhile community activities. Wherever she applied herself, she made a difference. Above all, she was a voracious reader and she passed this love of books on to her children.

Margaret is pre-deceased by her father, John (Jack) George Mason, and mother, Sarah (Sally) née Wilson. After serving in WW1, Jack emigrated from Newcastle-upon-Tyne, England to Detroit, where he found work at the Ford Motor Company. It was in Detroit where he met and married Sally, who had also recently emigrated, from Belfast, Northern Ireland, and who had found work in service for a family of Detroit and North Point, Michigan.

Margaret is survived by her husband, Robert, and their three children and spouses: Wendy Phillips and David Hilliker of Los Angeles, CA, Mark Phillips and Binh Lieu of Naples, Florida, and Susannah Phillips and Thomas Houck of Naples, Florida, and cousins Robert Alexander McConnell of Detroit, Michigan, David McConnell of Ewshot, England, Elizabeth Millar of Belfast, Northern Ireland, Robert Dobbin of Carrickfergus, Northern Ireland, Samuel Dobbin of Melbourne, Australia, Florence Chipp-Smith of Dresden, Canada, and Irene Preston of Folkestone, England.
