NEW BEDFORD ~ Gary W. Sherman of New Bedford, died peacefully at home Sunday July 21, 2013, after a period of declining health. He was the husband of Jeanne E. (Roberts) Sherman for 43 years.

A lifelong New Bedford resident, Mr. Sherman graduated from New Bedford High School in 1967 and Fitchburg State College in 1971. He taught in New Bedford Public Schools for 35 years. He was most recently employed at George's Premium Cigars in New Bedford.

Mr. Sherman was a member of the New Bedford Educators Association, Massachusetts Teachers Association, and National Educators Association. He was also an active member of Centre Trinity UMC and St. Paul's UMC.

Gary enjoyed his family, friends, and community and was in outreach ministry at Melville Towers.

Gary was an avid Boston sports fan and enjoyed visiting baseball parks around the country. He also enjoyed bowling, cribbage, cooking, and an occasional fine cigar.

He was the son of the late Melville Sherman and Mary B. (Reed) Sherman. He was preceded in death by sisters, Frances Spoore and JoAnne Bodeau and brothers, Ernest and Ellery R. Sherman.

He is survived by a brother, Linwood A. Sherman, sisters, Doris Sylvia and Lucille Ventor, and many nieces and nephews. He was beloved father to children, Samantha J. Sherman, Stephanie J. Sherman, Bradford W. Sherman, and Benjamin W. H. Sherman. Gary was the beloved "Papa" to three grandchildren.

In lieu of flowers, donations are appreciated to the Spaulding Rehab Hospital in Charlestown, Massachusetts or the American Diabetes Association.

A Celebration of Gary's life with cremains present will be held Saturday, July 27, from 4-8 PM, at the Cabral Baylies Square-Lamoureux Funeral Home and Cremation Services, 512 North Front Street, New Bedford. At the family's request, committal services will be private.
