He was born February 16, 1837 in Lafayette County, Missouri, the son of George Washington and Margaret (Smith) Coatney. His parents brought the fanily to Arkansas when he was six years old.
He and Elizabeth J. Cradduck were married in 1855 in Crawford County, Arkansas. They were the parents of six children.
He was with the Union Army during the Civil War. He served with the 1st Arkansas Calvary Regiment Company D of the Arkansas Volunteers with his brother James. They were in the battles at Pea Ridge, Prairie Grove and Fayetteville.
Burial is at Oliver Cemetery in Crawford County.
