Alfred had a sixth grade education and was a glass cutter in the Ford Plate Glass Factory. He was the son of Francis "Frank" and Catherine Sambree Bodart. His first marriage was to Grace Marie Finch on 6 October 1915 in Wood County. They divorced by 1920. He was short and slender with gray eyes and light brown hair. His second marriage was to Della Furgeson Emch on 23 April 1923 in Detroit, Michigan.
