Darrell was born November 30, 1927 in Pierre, SD to Eddie and Vivia (Perkins) Welch. He spent his early years on Buckeye Ranch North of Pierre. The Welch family moved to Blunt when he was a young boy.
Darrell was a worker - - He loved to work. He loved his family and he loved the Los Angeles Dodgers.
Darrell attended school in Blunt, SD. He then began a 42 year career with the South Dakota Depart of Highways when he was 17. He enlisted in the US Army on April 17, 1946 where he served in the Philippines and earned the rank of corporal. He was honorably discharged on October 15, 1947. He returned to Blunt and resumed working for the Department of Highways. He retired after following a career ending heart attack in 1989.
Darrell was united in marriage to Lois Osterkamp on May 18, 1957. The family moved to Pierre in 1964. He was a charter member of Resurrection Lutheran Church. Darrell shared his love of work and the Dodgers with his son, Kirby, and his grandson and granddaughter, Willie and Tobie.
Darrell is survived by his wife, Lois; son, Kirby; grandson, Willie; granddaughter, Tobie Jo and their mother Ami Jo Welch; sister, Charmaine Gardner; brother, Buddy Welch; sister-in-law, Fran Welch and 12 nieces and nephews. He was preceded in death by his parents; brothers, Keith and Vince; brother-in-law, Bob Gardner and a special uncle, Bud Perkins.
