Professional Soccer Player. 1930 FIFA World Cup Semifinalist with the US National Team. US Soccer Hall of Fame. Described by several sources as "the Babe Ruth of American Soccer," he had a 25-year career in United States pro soccer leagues, winning, among many honors, three American Soccer League Championships and eight US Open Cup titles with several teams, including the Fall River Marksmen, New York Yankees, New Bedford Whalers, and Brooklyn Hispano. He played six times for the United States with one goal, in an era when national team games were rare, and played in both the 1930 and 1934 FIFA World Cups, leading the United States to their best finish ever, third place in 1930, and losing in 1934 to the eventual World Champions, Italy. He was also noted for his gentlemanly play, having never been ejected or cautioned. He was inducted into the US Soccer Hall of Fame as a charter member in 1950.
