Robert was a first cousin of the writer Herman Melville. He initially came to Galena with his father's family in 1837, then returned to Pittsfield, where he married Susan Bates before moving back to Galena. He first worked in the newspaper business before turning to steamboating, to which he devoted the greater part of his life. From about 1872 he was in "the commission business," acting as agent for several steamboat lines.

Robert and Susan Melville had two sons, Robert Thomas Melville, born 1839, and Julian Hobart Melville, born 1847. Susan's burial place is unknown but she has an FAG site (unknown cemetery) listed below. She is probably buried in Greenwood Cemetery with her husband.

Robert's old friend Capt. L. Parkhurst said of him, "Bob was an upright, honorable true man, one of the very best I ever knew."

Quoted details from "The Last Summons," a long obituary in the DAVENPORT GAZETTE for 22 Jul 1881. Parts 1 and 3 are attached. The latter reports the burial in Greenwood Cem.
