A sad accident occurred some three miles this side of Umpire about 2 o'clock in the afternoon, Friday, one week ago. Ellwood Curtis Davis, aged 23 years, climbed a tree on the bank of the Gasconade, to watch for fish in the river, and ascertain if they were shoaling. In some manner he lost his hold on the tree and fell into the river in about three feet depth of water, and was dead when brought out of the stream. He was employed at the time by Mr. John Newton, whose 6 year old son was the only witness of the tragedy. The boy ran for help, but it was a considerable time before assistance arrived and it came too late. Curtis Davis was an excellent young man and was highly esteemed. His funeral took place at No. 5 school house Saturday, conducted by Rev. A. J. Ross.
