John I Davis, Sr was born on Marthas Vineyard Island, Dukes, Massachusetts, in 1756. In family lore, it is thought that John may have been from the Wampanoag Tribe of the Vineyard*. On 28 June 1787, in Maine, he married Elizabeth Holmes, daughter of Rev.Soldier Samuel Holmes and his wife, Charity Bryant. John and Elizabeth had nine children:

1. John I Davis, Jr (1787-1864) m. Anna Ackley (1793-1860)
2. Louisa Eliza Davis (1789-1849) m. Peter Richardson Holmes (1793-1839)
3. Daniel Davis (1791-1878) m. Hannah Maker (1806John -1861)
4. James Davis (1792-1863) m. Rhoda Richardson (1802-1865)
5. William Henry Davis (1793-1863) m. 1st Sarah Richardson (1793- ) m. 2nd Lucy Ann Beal Norton (1800-1871)
6. Mary Ann "Polly" Davis (1795-1888) m. Freeman French (1791-1852)
7. Catherine Davis (1796-1839) m. Adonijah Ackley (1790-1861)
8. Samuel Holmes Davis (1802-1872) m. Elizabeth Carr Thurlow (1803-1856)
9. Ann "Annie" Davis (1805-1880) m. Samuel Holmes (1802-)

John and Elizabeth had at least 59 grandchildren.

*(Regarding the "folk lore statement, about potential American Indian heritage" - John Davis is my 4th Great-grandfather, and my DNA shows no American Indian matches, so I think it is best to assume that this is in fact "folk lore".
