Iowa Governor. After attending pharmacy, he established a successful drugstore in 1922 and raised cattle on his farm in New Virginia, Iowa. He was a member of the Iowa State Senate, (1932-38) and a member of the Iowa House of Representatives, (1947-48). In 1949, he was elected as a Republican the 31st Governor of Iowa and served until his death in a highway auto accident at age 53. During his tenure as Governor, workmen's compensation benefits were increased, the highway patrol was expanded, anti-gambling laws were sanctioned, plus roads, schools and institutions were improved.
