ELI SCHOPF VICTIM
Pneumonia Fatal to Pioneer Resident-of Township.
Eli Schopf, for forty-seven years a resident on the same farm in Keyser township, the father of ten children, all living, and who, with his wife, recently celebrated his golden wedding anniversary, died Tuesday night at 9:30 o'clock of pneumonia at his home just a mile south of Garrett on the traction line.
The sickness lasted only nine days. The aged man took a cold and it quickly went to pneumonia. It was evident that the disease would likely prove fatal, on account of the extreme age and feeble condition of the patient. He steadily became, worse and all of the children were summoned to his bedside and all arrived before the end came. Throughout his life Mr. Schopf had previously enjoyed very good health, excepting the weakness of old age, and his cheerful disposition made it seem that he had a long time yet on earth.
Mr. Schopf was born April 4, 1831, and was aged therefore seventy-nine years, nine months and twenty-seven days. His birthplace was Lancaster, Pennsylvania.
He and his wife, who survives at the age of sixty nine, were married on November 15, 1860, in Pennsylvania and shortly after emigrated to Wayne county, Ohio. In 1863 they removed to this county and always afterward lived on the same farm where he died. They replaced a log house with a frame dwelling and later razed the latter and put up a brick house.
Mr. Schopf was a hard working and thrifty farmer and had the esteem and the respect of a great circle of acquaintances.
It was only last November 15 that Mr. and Mrs. Schopf celebrated the fiftieth anniversary of their marriage. They entertained their children, all being present but two, their grandchildren and many other relatives, the company numbering eighty-five people. Mr. and Mrs. Schopf were both in good health and splendid spirits that day.
These are the children, all of whom were here when the death came: Boston Schopf, living at home; Mrs. I. L, Smith of Hillsdale, Michigan; Mrs. Daniel Lung, south of Garrett; Mrs. Percy Cornell, south of Auburn; Philip Schopf of Cedar; Mrs. W. L. Heitz of Westminster, Pennsylvania; Mrs. Bert C. Pitch of Garrett; Sylvester and Preston Schopf, living at home, and Miss Alrneda Schopf, who has been living at Los Angeles, California. There are sixteen grandchildren. Mr. Schopf was the last to die of a family of eight children.
The funeral cortege will leave the house Saturday morning at 10 o'clock and services will be held at Butler Center church, the Rev. W. S. ('eons officiating. Interment at Cedar chapel.
