Fred was the son of Oramel Crawford and Catharine Bothell. His middle name on his birth record was Eugene, but it appears it was Erastus.

He was born in Guildhall, VT on the Old Home Crawford Farm, the original family homestead. His grandfather John Jr had bought it in 1792. It had left left family ownership for a short time. His brother George Oramel had been helping his father with it, but then in 1900 George was boarding in someone's house. His father had died in 1888 and George died in 1906. In the 1920's Fred Erastus repurchased the family homestead. It then remained in the Crawford's hands until after his son, Fred Coolidge, died in 1994 and his wife, Katherine, sold it around 1996-97. It is now a protected property.

When he was twelve years old he moved to Watertown, MA and lived with an uncle, Calvin D. Crawford, while furthering his education. Crawford attended Harvard College, graduating in 1881. After passing the Massachusetts bar exam, he practiced law in Boston and Watertown. He also served as town moderator for Watertown for many years.

In addition to his interest in the law, Fred E. was an avid genealogist. After his retirement he spent many happy summers in the Old Home Crawford in Guildhall researching the Crawford History. He published three books that were the results of his research: Your Grandmother, Mattie Coolidge Crawford, a biography of his wife; The Life and Times of Oramel Crawford, a biography of his father; and a family history entitled Early Crawford Ancestors in America. In his 93rd year he began to gather material for a biography of the famous Ethan Allen Crawford because his life interested him. Unfortunately he did not live long enough to accomplish this ambition.

On Feb 18, 1888 in Watertown he married Martha "Mattie" Sturtevant Coolidge, daughter of John Coolidge and Martha J. Sturtevant.

Their children were Calvin Dinsmore, Frederick Coolidge, and Ward Sturtevant.

He was predeceased by his wife Mattie on Dec 7, 1933; his father on Jan 17, 1888 and his mother on March 30, 1883.

Fred's son Calvin died in 1964 at 75yrs; son Ward died in 1968 at 78yrs; and son Fred died in 1994 at 103 years old.
