Hilliard, Ohio - Chester E "Chet" Ball,77 of Hilliard, died March 8, 1999, of cancer.

He was a retired assistant professor of journalism from Ohio State University with thirty years of service, publications editor at the Engineering Experiment Station, director of the Reprographics at the Research Foundation, and the owner of Sir Speedy Printing, Upper Arlington.

He was an Army colonel with more than thirty years of service, a veteran of World War II, recipient of the Silver Star, two Bronze Stars, and three Purple Hearts.

He was a native of Seth, an Eagle Scout, received a degree in journalism from Marshall College, Huntington, was a member of Kappa Alpha fraternity and was a former reporter and copy editor at the Harold-Dispatch, Huntington.

He received a master's degree from Ohio State University and taught journalism at Marshall.

He was a member of Hilliard United Methodist Church, Reserve Officers Association, Society of the Fifth Division, 10th Infantry Division Association, Hilliard Kiwanis and was a form-term member of the Hilliard City School District Board of Education.

He was proceeded in death by his parents, [Roman] Harry and Hattie (White) Ball and wife, Betty J. Ball.

Surviving: daughter, Beth Watkins of Marietta, Georgia; sons, H. Stuart of Seattle, Chester "Ted" Ball, Jr. of Pleasant City;sisters, Glenna Meadows of Seth; seven grandchildren; one great-grandchild.

Service was held at 11 a.m. Friday at Hilliard United Methodist Church with Pastor Jim Riggs officiating. Burial was in Pleasant City Cemetery. Tidd Funeral Home, Hilliard, was in charge of the arrangements.
