The 1870 census recorded Florence Little, 4, living in White Plains Township, Spartanburg, South Carolina, with father Thomas Little, 54, a farmer born in Scotland, mother Elvira, 43, born in North Carolina, and other Little family members: Worth Little, 2s, born in North Carolina; Fannie Little, 20; John, 17; Larcare, 10; and Douglas, 7. All of the younger Littles except Worth were born in South Carolina.

The 1900 census recorded Florence Atkinson, born Feb. 1867 [1866] in South Carolina, living in Elgin, Bastrop, Texas, with husband D. C. Atkinson, a physician born Nov. 1854 in South Carolina, and children: Hilda, born Jan. 1888; Fred, born Sept. 1893; Waunetta, born June 1895; and Peter, born April 1898. Florence and D. C. were reported as having been married for 13 years. Florence had given birth to 4 children, 3 of whom were still living. Hilda [adopted] had been born in South Carolina; all the other children were born in Texas. Florence's father and mother were born in Scotland and North Carolina, respectively.

The 1910 census recorded Florence Atkinson, 42, born in South Carolina, living in Bastrop County, Texas, with children: adopted daughter Hilda, 21, born in South Carolina; Juanita, 14; James T., 11 [see Peter above]; Florence, 8; Vaughn, 6; Mary, 3; and Dennis Crosby [Calhoun], 1 month. All of the children except Hilda were born in Texas. Also living in the home was niece Ola Little, 24, born in South Carolina. Florence had given birth to 7 children, 6 of whom were still living.
