What can I say about Casey.........

We, the family, got Casey a year after our last move. With the parents at work and the kids in school, our dog Belle was home alone all day. She handled it well but it just seemed to me that she could use a little companionship for those alone times. She could use, a buddy. And that what Casey was, a buddy, everyone's buddy.

When we went to the Humane Society that day to find Belle a friend we didn't have anything in particular in mind so we walked through the halls slowly taking notes. Who seemed friendly, who seemed to really want out and who was too big or too small or too loud. In one pen I found a lone dog, a black curled up ball of fur. I tried to get his attention but he would have none of it and totally ignored me but I wrote down his number anyway just because I had a feeling about him. Casey was the first dog we saw that day and we didn't need to see any more after that. He was just so unique and so friendly that I knew he was the one.

Yes, Casey was indeed unique. He wasn't a good looking dog by any measure. To me it looked as if he was put together with spare parts. He had a Corgi type body and the coloring of a Rottweiler except for his legs, which were multiple colors. He had large paws and shorts legs, long, soft, shaggy hair that shed in giant clumps and he had this ultra-inquisitive look in his eyes. Casey, as we found out, was not the sharpest tool in the shed though. But what he lacked in smarts he more than made up for in personality. Casey was teachable, sometimes, but I think he preferred to not be and he always had this way of looking at you while you did whatever. His head slightly cocked to one side or the other as if always saying, "What are you doing?" That little head cock is what made him adorable regardless of how he was put together.

Everyone adored Casey! Neighbors, friends, family, groomers, vets, strangers, everyone! And he was a friend to every one of them. Casey never met another person or another animal that he didn’t like and get along with. And with a good chest rub, he was your friend forever.

Casey was about 2 years old when we adopted him and we had 12 good years with him. If at any time you needed a friend, you seldom ever had to look for him. All you needed to do was look down by your feet and he was there. He was my little buddy which was all he ever wanted to be and right up till the end he was great at it. RIP Casey, you will be missed!
