Susan Lockwood Sharp Montgomery

Susan Lockwood Sharp Montgomery was born on April 3, 1932 in Birmingham, Alabama to Cleveland and Joanna (nee LaRue) Sharp. She died Monday, August 24, 2015 at JourneyCare in Barrington, Illinois surrounded by her loved and loving daughters. Susan had many careers over her long life. She studied fine and graphic arts at Mississippi State College for Women but graduated in 1953 with a degree in fine arts from the College of William and Mary, Richmond Professional Institute of Virginia. Later she studied sociology at the University of Alabama, Tuscaloosa and earned a teacher's certificate in art education at Alabama College in Montevallo. With this education she worked as a graphic artist for a church in Richmond, Virginia, creating window displays, signs, and advertisements for the newspaper and church publications. She was later a graphic artist for the United States government, illustrating technical documents at Fort Lee, Petersburg, Virginia and at Hayes Aircraft Corporation in Birmingham. She taught art at Jones Valley Grammar School in Birmingham before moving to Philadelphia, Pennsylvania to enter the religious life with the Trinitarian sisters. She returned to Alabama and met her husband at St. Thomas Catholic Church in Montevallo. Much of her later career was helping people and social work through various agencies of the State of Alabama. She also volunteered for the American Red Cross and Crisis Pregnancy Centers. Her longest and best career was as mother to her four children. Susan loved to dance, to travel around the world, to listen to classical and swing era music, to study art and architecture, and most recently to play Bridge with her girlfriends at Church Creek Assisted Living in Arlington Heights. She loved to spend time with her family, especially her grandsons, and was loved by all. Susan is survived by her children, James (Hafife) Montgomery of Memphis, Tennessee, Joanna (Brian) Metzger and Catherine (J Miles) Maxwell, both of Arlington Heights, and Lucinda (Dan Lubin) Montgomery of Nevada City, California; grandsons, Billy, Teddy, Sammy, and Charlie Metzger, J Maxwell, Simon Montgomery, Robert Maxwell and Ben Montgomery; sister, Joanna (Arthur) Adams Word; nephews, Curt (Eddie Chau) Adams and Martin (Amy) Adams. She was preceded in death by her husband of 30 years, Roy F. Montgomery; and by her parents. Memorial Visitation Thursday, August 27, 2015 from 5:00 pm until 8:00 pm with a 7:30 pm Memorial Service at Glueckert Funeral Home Ltd., 1520 North Arlington Heights Road, (4 blocks south of Palatine Road), Arlington Heights IL 60004. The Mass of Christian Burial will be said on Saturday, August 29, 2015 at 11:30 am at St. Thomas Catholic Church in Montevallo, Alabama and interment at the Montevallo Cemetery. In lieu of flowers memorials may be given to American Red Cross of Greater Chicago, 75 Remittance Drive, Suite #1907, Chicago, IL 60675-1907.
