Historian, Pacifist. He was born in Paris. During the Nazi Occupation of France, his parents were deported to the Auschwitz concentration camp and never heard from again. He then became a noted activist against the systematic use of torture during the Algerian War of Independence, the "Regime of the Colonels" (1967 to 1974) in Greece, historical revisionism of the Holocaust, and Israel's policies in Lebanon. Vidal-Naquet was an officer of France's Legion d'Honneur. Among his works are the trilogy "La Grèce Ancienne", "Les Grecs, les Historiens et la Démocratie", "L'Affaire Audin", "Les Crimes de l'armée française Algérie 1954-1962", "The Assassins of Memory and Other Essays", and "Mémories".
