He died of a heart attack while being fed breakfast at his home in Santa Monica, California. His youngest son Alan, 39, and his younger brother Joe, 74, were at his side. The World Record Freethrow Basketball Shooter (he made 12,874 out of 13,116 attempts) had been in good health until recently and he had been the subject of a "personality profile" by sports columnist Jerry Crow in the August 22, 2010, issue of the Los Angeles Times. In September of last year Fred fell while walking near his home and suffered soft-tissue neck and spine injuries. On February 19, he went in for corrective surgery and was discharged the next day, but never recovered. Fred was born in Santa Monica and graduated from Santa Monica High School (Class of 1955) and the California Institute of Technology (Class of 1959). He was the son of the late Luther Newman of Hendersonville, North Carolina, and the late Freda Schneider of Hamburg, Iowa. He served as a cryptographer in the Army Signal Corps during the Cold War and then worked as a computer programer for IBM near Las Cruces, New Mexico, and for Control Data Corp near Sunnyvale, California. He finished his "career" working in the Athletic Department back at his alma mater. A private Memorial Service is being held in Caltech's "Braun Athletic Center" at 2-PM on Sunday, May 18. He is survived by an older son Lance and his wife, Laurie, of Santa Clara, California, and by two grandsons.
