MILWAUKEE (AP) - The Milwaukee Police Department is investigating the circumstances surrounding a man's 911 call a week before his stepfather murdered him and his mother and then committed suicide, Chief Arthur Jones said.

Larry G. Johnson, 47, fatally shot 23-year-old Joel Wright and Wright's mother, Lavelle Johnson, 49, on Tuesday, before killing himself, police said.

Neighbors say on July 16 Wright called police to report that Larry Johnson had threatened him with a gun.

Neighbors also said they had seen two officers, with guns drawn, approach the Johnson residence cautiously the evening of July 16.

The police department has refused requests for reports or the tape of Wright's 911 call. Jones would not comment further on the internal review.

Larry Johnson wasn't arrested July 16, which suggests officers did not find a weapon or couldn't find corroborating accounts of Wright's complaint against his stepfather.

Lavelle Johnson filed for divorce May 31 and Larry Johnson moved out of the home earlier this month.

Wright moved back into his mother's home on July 15 to save money for nursing school and to watch over her in light of her failing relationship with her husband, according to friends, family and co-workers.According to the Memorial Wall for Murder Victims (shot multiple times). Domestic violence.
