BEVERLY: Amy (Carle) Jobes, 78, died Sunday, August 23, 2015 at her home surrounded by her family. She was the beloved wife of James W. Jobes, Jr.

Born in Birmingham, Alabama on December 15, 1936, she was the daughter of the late Louise (Wood) Carle Southwick and Howard H. Carle. She was also the stepdaughter of the late Thomas S. Southwick. She grew up in the Washington D.C. area and was a graduate of St. Agnes School in Alexandria, Virginia (now St. Stephen’s & St. Agnes School) in 1955 and from St. John’s College in Annapolis, Maryland in 1959, where she and her husband met. They were married on June 3, 1961 in Falls Church, VA, and settled in Memphis, Tennessee.

Amy taught part-time in various adult education and private schools while she raised her family. She returned to school and acquired an MA in Counseling from Memphis State University, then worked as a clinical counselor, leading to a desire to enter the Episcopal priesthood. She earned a Masters of Divinity in 1992 form the University of the South in Sewanee, TN and was ordained at All Saints Episcopal Church in Paragould, Arkansas in 1996. She served as Assistant Rector at St. Luke’s Episcopal Church in North Little Rock, Arkansas, focusing in counseling and pastoral care, and later served at Grace St. Luke’s and Holy Communion Episcopal Churches in Memphis.

When she retired, she and Jim moved to Beverly to be near their daughter, while spending large parts of the year with their son. While in Beverly, Amy continued to work as a supply priest at several North Shore Episcopal and Lutheran parishes. She also served as an assistant in retirement at St. Peter’s Episcopal Church in Beverly, where she and Jim were devoted parishioners.

In addition to her husband of fifty-four years, she is survived by her daughter and son-in-law, Elizabeth Jobes Hufford and Scott Hufford of Beverly; her son, Thomas H. Jobes of Gainesville, FL; three grandchildren, Amanda E. Hufford, Elijah C. Jobes and Sophia J. Jobes and several nieces and nephews. She was also predeceased by her brother, Howard H. Carle, Jr.

Her funeral service will be held on Thursday in St. Peter’s Episcopal Church, Ocean St., Beverly at 2 p.m. Relatives and friends are cordially invited to attend. There are no visiting hours.
