James Spencer Whitewood, 85, a native of Sussex County, England, died last Friday in a San Antonio hospital, where he had been a patient for several days. The funeral service s were held Sunday in the Harper Presbyterian Church, with Rev. S. C. Workman officiating. Interment was in the Harper Cemetery under the direction of Smiths.
He was educated in the schools of Uckfield, England, and in 1886 he, accompanied by W. J. Taylor, came to New York, and then to Texas. They settled in Bandera County, where they begun a ranching business. and later moved to the South Fork on the Guadalupe. After living there a few years Mr. Taylor moved to Kimble County and Mr. Whitewood established his ranch eight miles northwest of Harper.
His ranch was an open range and he began at once the task of fencing his land, which was completed within record time. He took great pride in his fine cattle, and later added sheep and goats to his ranges. He was married in February 1895 to Miss Emma Mason of Kimble County, and her death preceded his by three weeks.
In 1913 he moved to his present ranch near Harper, and the family home had been there since that time. In 1915 he was one of the organizers of the First State Bank in Harper, and was chosen as its president in 1923.
He was a member of the Presbyterian Church and of the Masonic Lodge, the latter having charge of the rites at his death. Pallbearers, members of the Harper Blue Lodge, were John S. Morris, H. A. Porter, Belmore Roberts, Max Scarbrough, George W. Duderstadt, John Duderstadt, David Schmidt and Milton Dyer.
He is survived by eight children, Mrs. Fred Nabers and Mrs. Burton Brown, Jr., Kerrville; Fred Whitewood, Mrs. Oliver Hopf, Mrs. Bernice Kinsey, Mrs. Grace Harper, and Spencer Whitewood, all of Harper. One brother, Charles J. Whitewood, of Harper, 18 grandchildren and 7 great grandchildren also survive.
