Dr. Catherine A. Poole, 80 of West Chester, PA died Friday February 28, 2014 at her home. She was the daughter of the late Robert Poole and the late Mary Siddoway Poole. Dr. Poole was born and raised in Idaho where she received her undergraduate education at Boise Junior College (now Boise State University) and College of Idaho. She received her M.D. degree in 1958 at the Oregon Health Sciences University, known at that time as the University of Oregon Medical School. Postgraduate training was done at the University of Miami Jackson Memorial Medical Center in Miami, Florida. She left Miami to pursue fellowship training in pediatric radiology at Children's Hospitals in Cincinnati, Ohio, Boston, Massachusetts, and Philadelphia, Pennsylvania. On completion of her training programs she returned to Miami and was appointed to the faculty of the University of Miami School of Medicine, in the Departments of Radiology and Pediatrics, as an Instructor in 1963. She developed Pediatric Radiology as a subspecialty at that institution and spent her entire professional career there, rising through the academic ranks to become Professor of Radiology and of Pediatrics, and serving as Chairman of the Department of Radiology for 15 years. She was a member of numerous professional organizations, including the Society for Pediatric Radiology, the American College of Radiology, the Radiological Society of North America, and the American Roentgen Ray Society. Her academic achievements were substantial and she lectured extensively throughout North and South America. She was elected to Fellowship in the American College of Radiology, and was an honorary member of several South American Radiological and Pediatric Societies. Her greatest source of pride and joy were the approximately 250 residents and fellows under her tutelage, who went on to practice radiology throughout the country. Dr. Poole was also devoted to her large faculty, and treasured their academic growth and achievement. As a gifted teacher and clinician she was the recipient of numerous accolades throughout her career. Aside from her love of pediatric radiology, she enjoyed many extracurricular activities, particularly sailing and golf, was an avid reader, and was devoted to her many furry friends. Though she left the state early in her life, she always remained an Idahoan at heart. In 1996 Dr. Poole retired and settled in West Chester, Pennsylvania. She is survived by her brother, Frank Siddoway Poole of Newcunlberland, Pennsylvania. Services and interment will be private. In lieu of flowers contributions may be made to Willow Tree Hospice, 616 E.
