Max Dean Meyers, 55, of Denton, Texas, a son of Mrs. Eva Vorba of Traer, died Monday morning, November 8, at Sunrise Hill Care Center in Traer. after several years of failing health. Accompanied by his wife, Helen, he was brought to Traer by plane from Texas, arriving about 4 p. m. last Friday. It was their plan after visit here with his mother and daughter to enter a Veterans hospital for a checkup, treatment or surgery Max had been rated for years by the U S Veterans administration as a 100 per cent disabled veteran of the Marine Corps of World War II and had a priority to enter a Veterans hospital in case of need for care at any time. But he died suddenly in Traer early Monday morning.

His funeral services were held at 1:30 Wednesday afternoon in the Erickson Funeral Home, conducted by the Rev. Myron W. Brockmeyer, pastor of the Traer United Methodist -church. Pallbearers were John A. Erickson, Leonard Cherveny, Kenneth Powell, Earl Dinsdale, Franklin Earley and Wendell Crawford. In charge of the flowers were Mr. and Mrs. Dale Ross of Buckingham and Mr. and Mrs. Kenneth Wignall. Interment was in Dysart cemetery, with military services by the ceremonial squad of Kubik-Finch Post, American Legion, of Traer.

Max is the second son of Mrs. Vorba to be taken by death within the last month. Her son, Gerald, for many years a teacher in Iowa schools died in a Des Moines hospital of leukemia October 15 Max was born at Dysart June 22, 1916, the youngest son of Roy and Eva Hite Meyers His father died years ago, and he was five years old when his mother was remarried to the late John Vorba, and they came to Traer. All three of her sons were reared by Mr. and Mrs. Vorba and attended the Traer schools. Max was graduated from Traer high school in 1935. After U. S. involvement in World War II, Max enlisted in the Marine Corps at Des Moines, December 8, 1942 and was trained at Camp Pendleton, near San Diego, California, and in Hawaii. He was assigned to the 5th Marine division for service in the South Pacific, and was badly wounded in the battle for Iwo Jima, receiving back injuries and a concussion. He was hospitalized overseas and was returned to the States and discharged from the service in Chicago, November 28, 1945, as a private first class after 28 months, 18 of which were overseas. Max was employed for a time in Des Moines after his war service. He had more surgery at the Des Moines Veterans hospital, but the war wounds continued to give him trouble most of his life.

Max was first married in 1939 to Wanda Mason of Toledo, after which he was employed at Vinton and by the Traer Cooperative Creamery association. They were parents of a daughter, Sandra, who made her home with her grandparents, Mr. and Mrs. Vorba, in Traer, many years, is still employed here and living with Mrs. Vorba. The marriage ended in divorce. Max was remarried in Kansas City, Missouri, to Helen Fiala, They lived in Cedar Rapids about two years after their marriage, then moved to Texas in 1951, making their home at Denton about 40 miles north of Dallas, where he was employed for about one year by North Texas Producers Association. Besides his daughter, Sandra, his family includes two sons. Max K. Meyers of Denver, Colorado, and Darol of Eau Claire, Wisconsin, and a stepson, Joe Fiala Jr , of Cedar Rapids, Iowa; his mother, Eva Vorba, and a brother, Pressley H. Meyers.
