Wesley Isiah Garner age 73 of Centreville, Michigan passed away unexpectedly early Monday morning August 24, 2015 at the Sturgis Hospital Emergency Room.
He was born January 14, 1942 in Washington DC, son of the late Wesley Carter Garner and Roberta Loretta (Long) Garner.
On June 12, 2010 Wes married Caryl Susan (Lips) Fittro in Sturgis.
Wes resided in Centreville since 1997 coming from Olivet. His early life was lived in Washington DC where he was a graduate of McKinley Peck High School. He furthered his education at the Teachers College of Washington DC and worked diligently on his Doctoral Degree at Wayne State University in Detroit.
Wes's life work was centered around education, teaching both elementary and college students. For many years he worked as an administrator in public school systems, including Niles Brandywine Public Schools and Bay City Public Schools. Most recently, he worked as an Education Professor at Trine University in Angola, Indiana where he was honored with Professor Emeritus status. Previously, he was a Professor of education at Olivet College in Olivet, Michigan.
Wes was a renowned writer and a member of the Sturgis Writers Mill. He wrote many articles for outdoor publications as well as adventure stories for children and young adults that were published in public school textbooks. His educational articles were published worldwide and in many languages. He was a gifted teacher and taught his education students with enthusiasm and creativity. Through his love for reading and writing, he developed an educational system (C.A.P.S.) and traveled throughout the country as a guest reading consultant.
As a great outdoorsman, Wes was a member of the St. Joseph County Conservation and Sportsman Club where he also enjoyed volunteering his time as a 4-H leader in the shooting sports. He was a skilled sailor, and loved cruising the Great Lakes in over forty years of sailing. In addition, he loved backpacking and hiking.
Wes was an active and dedicated member of the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints in Sturgis where he held callins of High Priest, Gospel Doctrine teacher, mission leader and home teacher.
He is survived by his loving and devoted wife: Suzy; two sons: Andrew Garner of Sturgis and Nathan (Debbie) Cuddihy-Garner of Broomfield, Colorado; Two grandchildren: Elizabeth Grace and Joshua Patrick; step-children: Maria (Ret. Lt. Colonel Brent) Lawniczak of Wetumpka, Alabama, Christian (Becky) Fittro of Chapel Hill, North Carolina, Joshua Fittro of Sturgis, Samuel (Holly) Fittro of Sturgis, Meghan Dobberteen of Sturgis and Hannah (Matt) Lehman of Sturgis; step grandchildren: Justin Lawniczak, Chelsea (Landon) Woolsey, Ryan and Emily Lawniczak, Blake and Taylor Fittro, Noah and Maya Lehman, Ethan and Blake Furr, Jaxon and Mazey Fittro and Oliver Dobberteen; one step-great grandchild: Reid Woolsey; four younger sisters: Roberta Jackson, Gay Bernard, Yvonne Garner and Crystal Garner and several nieces and nephews.
The family will receive friends from 3:00-6:00 P.M. Sunday at the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints, 1111 Galyn St. in Sturgis. Funeral services will be held Monday at 11:00 A.M. at the church. A graveside committal will follow the service at Oak Lawn Cemetery in Sturgis.
