Arthur Gordon Rose was the son of Alexander Rose, a Scotsman who was a Charleston merchant, and Margaret Smith, the daughter of Judge William Smith of New York. His birthdate is uknown, but he was mentioned in his father's will dated 1794. He was the youngest of his parents' six children. His grandfather was Hugh Rose, 15th Baron Kilravock in Scotland. He married Elizabeth Wigg Barnwell, a direct descendant of John "Tuscarora Jack" Barnwell, at St. Helena's Church in Beaufort, SC in 1823 and the couple had two children, Arthur and Amelia. His first wife Elizabeth died in New York in 1830 and Mr. Rose remarried in 1837. His second wife was Elizabeth Gardner and they had three children. Mr. Rose worked in the banking business in Charleston for many years, rising to President of the Bank of Charleston between 1850-1856. He owned a home on Rutledge Street as well as other properties in the Charleston area. After losing a son, Lt. Alexander Rose, CSA, in 1863 and a daughter, Louisa, in 1865, he and his second wife left America and traveled in Europe with their daughter Elizabeth and her family. His widowed daughter Amelia and her son Arthur Rose Guerard were with them as well. Mr. and Mrs. Rose settled in London and he died there in 1880. Burial was in the Brompton Cemetery in West London. Mr. Rose and several of his family members are memorialized on the Rose Monument at the Unitarian Church on Archdale St. in Charleston, SC.
