Betty Lee Wessel, 86, passed away peacefully in the early hours of Friday, August 21, 2015. She was born on March 15, 1929 in St Louis, Missouri, to the late Elmer and Hilda Quernheim.

Betty was an only child but she was surrounded and influenced by her many aunts and uncles who doted on her.She graduated from Rubicon Business School and then married the love of her life, Robert L Wessel "Bob", also of St Louis, on December 18, 1948. Their 66 years of marriage was a full life of children, grandchildren, great grandchildren, travel, and community.

Early in their marriage Betty and Bob moved to California and North Carolina where Bob was stationed in the Marine Corps. Bob, a WWII vet, also served in the Korean Conflict and Betty stood by his decision to re-enlist for military service even though it meant their life was disrupted until he returned.

They moved to West Allis, Wisconsin, for Bob's new career in engineering and to settle into their new life with a growing family. Their children, Wendy, Gary, Tammy and Scotty, were always the center of their life and they shared adventures, backyard picnics, travel, holiday parties, dances, athletics, music, and love.

The family moved to Charlottesville in 1969 with Bob's new job. Soon after, Betty started work at Greenbrier Elementary School, where she stayed for over 15 years, oftentimes as a "second Mom" to many of the students. Betty was the Mom and wife who managed everything and made it look easy. From cooking, sewing dance costumes, hosting school picnics, caring for flower and vegetable gardens, to driving everyone to and fro, she made it happen. Betty loved to drive, especially to visit her kids in Miami, Memphis, Providence, and Virginia Beach and until just recently was still seen behind the wheel around town."Grammie," as she was affectionately known by her seven grand, and two great-grand kids, taught us that as long as you have family and friends surrounding you, one is living an exceptional life of fulfillment.

Betty never met a stranger, and always had a smile on her face. She was charitable and generous, and worked the soup kitchens, decorated the holiday tables for senior luncheons, decorated their house for holidays and always had a seasonal flag hanging from the front of their home. She remembered everyone's birthdays and anniversaries and loved to mail cards, lots of them, and with lots of tape. Betty and Bob enjoyed eating out and they loved to frequent the locally owned restaurants in the area. She always looked on the employees as her friends and their kindness was, and is, very much appreciated.

Betty was kind to all and loved animals. The four legged children also grew and their last rescue, 'Bo' had a wonderful life as her companion.Betty remained very active after retiring. She and Bob travelled extensively, including to see children and grandchildren, and the annual family reunions were a testament of her interest in family, skills in organization, and her creativity. She would plan take away Bingo games with lucrative prizes, continuous food, creative adult beverages, slide shows of the family, and sitting back to watch the family with Bob. Betty also maintained her beautiful yard and flower beds, fell in love with their backyard birds, spent hours doing Word Search puzzles, and enjoyed Mexican Train Dominos.

Betty and Bob were also very involved in the Charlottesville Senior Center where they are members of the 1180 club and were past officers for both the Senior Center and for the local AARP chapter.

We will all miss the goodness that Betty, Mom, and Grammie shared with us, but know we are better people as a result of her.

Betty leaves behind her husband, Bob, and her four children, Wendy Lester (Malcolm, deceased, her son, Phil and his wife, Karen, with children, Webb and Maxie), Gary Wessel (his wife, Kathryn, and children, Chandler, Cameron, and Cooper), Tammy Mavromatis (her husband, Jack, and sons, Carter and Corey), and Scotty Wessel (his wife, Kate, and son, Taylor), and cousins, nieces, and nephews.

In lieu of flowers or gifts, please consider donations to Charlottesville Albemarle SPCA, www.caspca.org, 3355 Berkmar Drive, Charlottesville, VA 22901, (434) 973-5959. She would be grateful.Visitation will be held from 1 until 2 p.m. Tuesday, August 25, 2015, at Hill and Wood Funeral Home, followed by the funeral service beginning at 2 p.m. Interment will follow at Holly Memorial Gardens.Condolences may be sent to the family at www.hillandwood.com.
