As a child, Dale helped on the family farm along with his eleven siblings. His life was not all work, though. In his younger years he enjoyed roller skating, and met the love of his life, Marjorie Pyne, at the skating rink. On September 3, 1944, Dale got to marry the women he frequently referred to as “the prettiest girl in Aberdeen”. They eventually moved to a farm north of Aberdeen, where they raised their family and farmed for many years. Marge and Dale were together every day for 67 years of wedded bliss, until Marge’s death in 2012.
Dale raised his own family to farm and continued farming with his son David until around 2002. He enjoyed raising livestock and always had a good farm dog by his side. He was interested in weather, as farmers are, and used old farmer’s tales to help predict incoming weather. He could have written his own almanac. Though sometimes when asked, he’d say, “I’ll tell you next spring how the winter was, rather than how it’s gonna be.” Dale had a passion for old machinery, liked attending tractor pulls and threshing bees; and restored an old John Deere that he was always proud to take his grandchildren for a ride on.
In his retirement, Dale became a bingo master and always had a jigsaw puzzle set up to work on, encouraging any visitors to sit a while and help.
Grateful for having shared Dale’s life are children, Bonnie McElhone, Judy (Ronald) Huettl, Jack (Sandy) Crawford, David (Barb) Crawford, Aberdeen, ten grandchildren, 16 great-grandchildren, and two great-great grandchildren, and a sister, Doris (Frank) Felix.
He was preceded in death by his parents, wife, siblings: Luverne Crawford, Evelyn Schaunaman, Arlene Schaunaman, Les Crawford, Elaine Lane, Orville Crawford, Arlye Crawford, Myrtle Fiedler, Emery Crawford, and Alvin Crawford; and granddaughter Tracy Jean Huettl.
