Joseph Early, 78, died Tuesday, August 21, 2007, in Tallahassee. The service will be at 11 a.m. EDT Saturday at Bethel AME Church in Monticello, with burial at Oakfield Cemetery. The visitation will be from 2:30 to 7:30 p.m. today at Tillman Funeral Home (850-997-5553). A native and lifelong resident of Jefferson County, Mr. Early was a retired head of carpentry for Plant Operations and Maintenance at Florida A&M University.

He was a trustee for many years at Bethel AME Church in Monticello. He also served on the boards of directors for numerous civic business and fraternal organizations in Jefferson County and throughout the Big Bend. Mr. Early often volunteered his talents to build and rehab structures for the elderly and disadvantaged.

He was a U.S. Army veteran of the Korean War and a member of VFW Post 251.

He was preceded in death by his mother, Dorothy Perry Early, who died when he was a child; his parents who raised him, Virgil and Lelia Perry Roberts; and his son, Gary Leonard.
