Civil War Union Soldier. Boiler Maker. He enrolled in the army on September 9, 1861, at the age of 20. The 1880 US Census identifies his year of birth as 1844. He mustered into Company A, 51st Regiment, Pennsylvania Volunteer Infantry as a private. When he mustered out on July 27, 1865, he was a sergeant. Some military records misspell the surname "Fillman." He died in the Exeter train wreck which occurred when a train carrying passengers from Harrisburg to Philadelphia rammed an excursion train of Norristown natives returning from the state capitol after the dedication of a statue in honor of former Governor and Brigadier General John Frederick Hartranft.
