He mustered into Company A, 51st Regiment, Pennsylvania Volunteer Infantry as a private. When he mustered out on July 27, 1865, he was a sergeant. Some military records misspell the surname "Fillman." He died in the Exeter train wreck which occurred when a train carrying passengers from Harrisburg to Philadelphia rammed an excursion train of Norristown natives returning from the state capitol after the dedication of a statue in honor of former Governor and Brigadier General John Frederick Hartranft.
