Earl Ellwood Simmons, 86, lifelong Texas County resident died Thursday, April 18, 1996 at Dunaway Manor.

The son of Texas County pioneer family, Annie Catherine (Barnhart) and Lemuel L. Simmons, he was born Oct. 4, 1909 on the family farm in northern Texas County, Oklahoma. He attended North Flat School and started his farming and ranching career as a young man. He was united in marriage to Gracie Boaldin on Nov. 24, 1930 in Guymon. The Simmons' made their home on the family farm until Mr. Simmons' retirement in 1980 when they briefly moved to Elkhart, Kans. and later moved to Guymon in 1982.

In 1957, Mr. and Mrs. Simmons devoted their lives to Christ and study of the Bible. Mr. Simmons served as a Lay Minister, preaching at the Church of Christ, Elkhart, Kans. for several years. He was a member of the Church of Christ in Guymon.

Survivors include his wife, Gracie Simmons of the home; a son, Dudley Simmons and wife Peggy of Westminster, Colo; one sister, Bessie Hear of Elkhart; one brother Roy Simmons and wife, June, of Elkhart; 10 grandchildren; 25 great-grandchildren; and five great-great-grandchildren.

Funeral services were held Monday, April 22, at 2 p.m. at the Church of Christ, with Gerald Stewart, minister, officiating. Interment followed at 4 p.m. at Elkhart Cemetery, Elkhart, Kans. under the direction of Henson-Novak Funeral Directors of Guymon.
