Ret. NYPD Detective James Houston, 68, beloved husband of Joy (Herzberg) Houston, passed away on January 27, 2015, after losing his battle to cancer. Jim was born in NY the son of the late John Houston and Helen Reilly-Houston. He is survived by his children, Amy Houston, Jimmy (Danielle), and Michael (Heather), and grandchildren, Victoria, Jack, and Kinley. He was the brother of Lawrence Houston and the late Jean Hall. Jim served in the Marine Corps and then joined the NYPD. He moved to Charlotte in 1984. Jim was a member of the Charlotte Marine Corps League, Board member of the NYPD 10-13 Club of Charlotte, NC and served on the Indian Trail Public Safety Committee. Friends and relatives may offer condolences at the Houston residence on Saturday and Sunday 7-9pm and on Friday and Sunday 2-4pm. In lieu of flowers, donations can be made to the NYPD 10-13 Club of Charlotte, NC, 137 Cross Center Rd., Suite 150, Denver, NC 28037 to continue the programs he supported.


James John Houston was born November 28th, 1946, in Jamaica, Queens, NYC to John James "Jack" Houston (1919-1957) a WWII veteran, and Helen M. Reiley. Jim's father passed away when he was only 10 years old. Jim enlisted in the USMC in 1963, and served in the Vietnam War. He was an NYPD police officer and homicide detective. He was married twice and had three children. He was first married to Susan, from that union having two sons: Jimmy in 1971 and Michael in 1976.


He was married again on June 26, 1994 to Joy Herzberg of NJ, having one daughter: Amy Elizabeth Houston in 1997.
