His paternal grandparents were Allen Pool and Azenth/Acena Burnside of Kanawha Co. and later Boone Co., WV. [The name Simpkins comes from the Pool family]. His maternal grandparents were Thomas Holstein and Martha Collins of Kanawha Co. and later Boone Co., WV.
Most records show Simpkins birth year as 1875 though he is listed as age 2 in the 1870 census in Boone County, WV, and age 11 in 1880, which would make his birth year about 1868/9. In the 1870 census, he was living with his mother, his grandmother Martha Holstein, and sister Louisa J. Pool, 14. [She may have been a half sister since she was born about 1856 and their parents didn't marry until after the 1860 census]. In the 1880 census, Simpkins was living with his mother who is listed as divorced. She remarried in Sept. 1880 to John Price in Scott, Boone Co., WV. She died between 1880 and 1900, the year her husband was listed as a widower and a lodger in the census in Scott, Boone Co. [Note: Mary (Holstein) Pool Price is not to be confused with Mary (Goff) Pool, wife of Presley Pool of Roane Co., WV who died in 1926.]
