Also known as Hugh McKillip. Hugh was born sometime between 1770 and 1780. He was the son of Andrew and Elizabeth Lowry McKillip and the grandson of Hugh McKillip of Stokes County, North Carolina. His father, Andrew McKillip, and his grandfather, Hugh McKillip, are proven Revolutionary War Patriots recognized by the Sons of the American Revolution.

New evidence has shown Hugh's mother, Elizabeth Lowry McKillip, was born around 1760, so his birth date is more likely closer to 1780. There is a tradition of naming males Hugh White in both the McCaleb and Lowry/Lowrey families. It appears the name Hugh White comes from the Lowry side.

Hugh McKillip and Elizabeth Holbrook were married on August 13, 1803 in Stokes County, North Carolina.

Hugh and his family settled in Fayette County, Alabama, around 1830 and lived on the land currently occupied by the Berea Church of Christ. Hugh's son, William Franklin McCaleb, donated land to the church for its first meetinghouse.

Fred McCaleb (1916-2011), a descendant and McCaleb family historian, believed that Hugh White and Elizabeth Holbrook McKillip/McCaleb were most likely buried in unmarked graves in Whitehead Cemetery on the hill above the Berea Church of Christ in Fayette County, Alabama.

A history written about the Berea Church of Christ states the following: "A few yards from the present building [Berea Church of Christ], on a hilltop overlooking the Sipsey River, lies Hugh White and Elizabeth Holbrook McCaleb keeping watch on their beloved Berea." Children:
1. Virginia Jane/Jane M. McCaleb, m. Robert Logan
NOTE: Marriage record from 1822 clearly states name as Jane M. McCaleb.
2. John A. McCaleb, m. Mary Ann Hackworth
NOTE: John A. McCaleb's grave marker and cemetery survey records have his last name spelled McCalab. Cemetery survey records indicate he lived 1798 ? 1886 with a question mark. Grave marker indicates he lived 1798 - 1880. It is believed, and census records indicate, that he most likely lived 1805 - 1886.
3. Lavinia McCaleb
NOTE: A Lavinia McCaid married a David Gibson on November 14, 1822 in Morgan County, Alabama. A David R. Gibson shows up in US census reports in Lawrence County, Alabama. In the 1850 and 1860 US census reports he is married to Eliza born in 1807. She could possibly be and evidence supports that she might be Eliza McCord, not Lavinia McCaleb. Records show this David R. Gibson only married once. This David R. Gibson had a son, James M., who lived in Tishomingo County, Mississippi. Also the McCords were neighbors in census reports.
4. Barbara McCaleb, m. Thomas Lauderdale
5. Andrew McCaleb, m. Leah Catherine McCollum
6. James H. McCaleb, m. Phoebe Hollingsworth
7. Hugh White McCaleb Jr., m. Mahala Richards

NOTE: Elizabeth McCaleb possibly married Unknown Howell. Not confirmed.
9. Alfred Cowan McCaleb, m. Mary Ann McDonald
