Jacob is a son of Gabriel and Mary (Keen) Brown. He married Ruth Gordon about 1760, they have four children: Jacob Jr, Thomas, Benjamin and John Gordon.

Jacob is the founder of Brown's Settlement.

He was a Captain at Kings Mountain in the Revolutionary War.

There is a plaque in his honor on the Washington County Court House in Jonesborough, Tennessee. (photograph)

Jacob Brown appears in four different places in a book titled: "America's First Western Frontier: East Tennessee" by Brenda C. Calloway.
