Funeral rites were held for Zenas Mattson at the Knosher Funeral Home in Foldendale on Monday, January 12. The following is a brief recap of his life.

On December 24, 1889, Matt and Permelia Mattson welcomed a son, Zenas Franklin, to their home just north of Centerville.

Early in the 1900's he acted as a substitute mail carrier. In those days mail was delivered through snow and mud by mule or horse and wagon. He often related in later years some of his experiences along the rural route which was divided into two of 31 and 29 miles each. As time progressed, so did the methods of mail delivery and Zenas kept pace with two Fords, on a Model A, and about 25 Chevys. He retired in December, 1959, after over 40 years of service.

Both his first and second wives, Bertha Miller and Virginia Jussila, preceded him in death. On September 2, 1953, he married Ruth Niva who survives him with four seto-children and several nieces and nephews.

According to those who have known Zenas all his life, he always had a very happy nature and was devoted to his Lord. He also loved children and many of the youngsters along the mail route will remember him as "the mail carrier who gave us candy when we would meet him at the box." He also was the leader of a Boy Scout troop in Centerville and took them on several hikes and camping trips. He taught young people in Sunday School for many years in addition to being an elder and quietly serving his Lord in any way he could up to the day of his death.

Zenas was a physical fitness enthusiast and could be seen almost daily, riding his bicycle, even in inclement weather. He also was especially fond of hunting and would take his vacations in the fall and head for Wyoming where the antelope were.

Zenas's influence in the church and community will be sorely missed. He was really one person about whom no one ever said an unkind word. His sense of humor, his kindness and thoughtfulness, and his stories about yesteryear will all be missed.
