Marine Cpl. Baucus was assigned to the 3rd Light Armored Reconnaissance Battalion, 1st Marine Division, I Marine Expeditionary Force, Twentynine Palms, California, as a scout and team leader. Baucus was killed while conducting combat operations. Phillip attended Capital High School in Helena, Montana, where he was on the track team and played string bass in the school orchestra. He is remembered as a mature and friendly student who was just great to be around. He came to class with a smile on his face everyday and got along well with everyone. He graduated from Capital High School in 1995 and a few years after graduation he was operating heavy machinery at his old school for a contractor doing a renovation project. Phillip enjoyed travel, reading, computers and model trains. On September 13, 2002, Phillip joined the Marine Corps and began his second tour in Iraq in March. While in the Marines, he was awarded numerous decorations, including the Marine Corps Good Conduct Medal, the National Defense Service Medal and the Combat Action ribbon. Phillip is survived by his wife Katharine.

NOTE: Phillip is the nephew of U.S. Sen. Max Baucus of Montana.
