Frank the son of Marine Vallone of New York City and James Vallone enlisted in the US Marine Corps on January 24 1968 in New York City. He arrived in Vietnam on July 7 1968 where he was assigned to and served with Company F, 2d Battalion, 5th Marines, 1st MARDIV (Rein) FMF.

On September 11, a from Company F on their way to a pre-arranged ambush site was attacked by a superior enemy force in the vicinity of the Phu Lac village complex in Duy Xuyen District of Quang Nam Province. Firing automatic weapons and M-79 grenades the VC attempted to overrun the Marines, a reaction team was dispatched quickly including two M48 Tanks as support engaging in the fire fight. When contact with the enemy was broken, the Marines suffered seven men killed in the action and several were wounded. One of the casualties was PFC Vallone who was killed as a result of hostile rifle fire.
