Ray graduated as the Salutatorian from Georgetown High School in 1940. In 1943 while still attending Southwestern, he entered active service with the Army. During WWII he served with the 103rd Infantry Division and saw combat in France, Germany and Austria for which he received the Combat Infantryman's Badge with a Bronze Star. He returned to the U.S. with the 5th Infantry Division and was Honorably Discharged in January 1946.

In 1946, Ray resumed his studies at Southwestern University and graduated Cum Laude in 1947. He then began graduate work at The University of Texas at Austin and graduated with an MBA in 1950. During the same year he began employment at UT Austin in the Office of Accounting, where he served in several positions until his retirement in 1985.

In 1950 he married Eutha Ree Phillips and was blessed by this union for 65 years. Ray and Eutha enjoyed extensive travels driving the highways throughout the U.S.

Ray was an active member of the Baptist Church for over 60 years serving in many capacities and was currently a member of Northwest Baptist Church, Austin, TX.
