Services will be at 10 a.m. Thursday at Holy Ghost Catholic Church. Burial will be in Mount Calvary Cemetery, where military rites will be accorded by the American Legion, Dubuque Post 6. Friends may call from 4 to 7 p.m. Wednesday at Behr Funeral Home, 1491 Main St., where there will be a parish wake service at 4 p.m.
He was born on Oct. 24, 1916, in Trempleau, Wis., son of John and Bella (Stoeffel) Casanova.
He married Edna Adkinson on June 20, 1938, in Garner, Iowa; she preceded him in death on June 21, 1980. He later married Betty Blum Davis on July 23, 1997, in Dubuque.
Mr. Casanova managed grocery stores for the A&P Grocery Stores in Cedar Rapids, Tipton and Mount Pleasant, Iowa. He managed the A&P Grocery Store in Dubuque for many years until his retirement. Joe and Edna also operated Casanova's Store in Houghton, Iowa. They retired to Dubuque in 1978.
He served with the Army during World War II in Germany.
Joe was a member of Holy Ghost Parish, Dubuque.
He and Betty were avid golfers and enjoyed square dancing.
Surviving are his wife, Betty Casanova; a son, James J. Casanova, of Dubuque; two sisters, Frances Wittstock, of Davenport, Iowa, and Eunice Dolter, of Dubuque; and nieces and nephews.
He also was preceded in death by a son, Mark, at the age of one; a brother, Clarence Dean; and two sisters and their husbands, Laura and Leo Brewer and Lucy and Jack Connor.
