OBITUARY: Gene Wells Halverson (1920-2006)
Gene W. Halverson of Duluth died on Memorial Day, Monday, May 29, 2006. He was born in 1920 on a southwestern Minnesota farm homesteaded by his Norwegian grandfather. Gene graduated from Lamberton High School in 1937 and from Macalester College in 1941. Enlisting in the Navy, he was a PT boat skipper in the South Pacific during World War II. In 1945 he married Betty Dahlberg.
In 1947 Gene graduated from the University of Minnesota Law School. Before retiring in 2001, he practiced with the same Duluth law firm for more than 50 years in the fields of civil litigation and general practice. He was president of the 11th District Bar Association in 1971. In 1973-74 he was President of the Minnesota State Bar Association and a member of the House of Delegates of the American Bar Association. He was inducted into the American College of Trial Lawyers in 1974. From 1980 to 1983 he was a member of the Minnesota State Board on Judicial Standards, and served a term as chairman. Gene was president of the Duluth Superior Symphony Orchestra and served on its Board for six years. He served on the boards of The Lake Superior Chamber Orchestra, The College of St. Scholastica and Miller-Dwan Hospital. He served First United Methodist Church in many capacities during his 55 year membership.
Gene was preceded in death by his parents, C.A. Halverson and Vesta Halverson; three sons, Eric, Arthur and Nathan in 1967; and three brothers, Alfred, Frederick and Dr. William. Gene is survived by his wife, Betty; brother, Dr. Kenneth (Mary Alice); four children, Dr. Paul (Dr. Gloria) of Brookfield, Wisc., Philip (Dr. Kathryn) of Duluth, Mary (Rev. Andrew Waldo) of Shorewood, Minn., and Patricia (Dr. Gregory Cooper) of Pittsburgh; nine grandchildren; and one great grandchild.
MEMORIAL SERVICE: 4 p.m. Saturday, June 3, in First United Methodist Church, on Skyline Boulevard and Central Entrance in Duluth. Gathering of family and friends at 3 p.m. and reception following the service. In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to First United Methodist Church or to the Miller-Dwan Hospice House Foundation to build a regional hospice center.
