Luman was the son of George Bowdish and Maria Hoag Bowdish. His father was a farmer at Root and later a teamster at Oneonta. Luman graduated from Albany State Normal College in 1889. He was a school teacher and principal at various schools at New York, Vermont, Rhode Island, and Massachusetts and later a superintendent of schools at Middleburgh, New York. He was also licensed to preach by Troy Methodist Episcopal Conference. Luman married to Harriet A. Somers about 1891. They had one child, Alton O. Bowdish. Luman married next to Mrs. Grace Sawyer about 1935.
