Mr. Edwin Yates Hemphill, Sr., age 80 of Marion, passed away on Tuesday, July 8, 2003 at Memorial Mission Hospital in Asheville. Born in McDowell County on March 28, 1923, he was the son of the late J. Rodney Hemphill, Sr., and Mattie Simmons Hemphill.
Mr. Hemphill was a member of the First Baptist Church of Marion.
He was former owner of G & R Recapping in Asheville, N. C.
He was a U. S. Air Force Veteran having served in WWII and was a member of Marion Civitan Club for 50 years with 48 years perfect attendance.
Surviving Mr. Hemphill is his wife, Hazel Williams Hemphill of the home; three daughters, Kay Duckworth and husband Jimmy of Marion, Brenda Dale and husband Dickey of Marion and Janice H. Daves also of Marion; one son, Edwin "Bo" Yates Hemphill of Holly Springs, NC; two sisters, Margaret Anthony and Lucille Hemphill both of Marion; ten grandchildren and 10 great grandchildren.
Services will be held on Thursday, July 10, 2003 at 11:00 AM in Westmoreland Chapel with Rev. Jerry Allen officiating. The family will receive friends one hour prior to the service at the funeral home.
Interment will be in Oak Grove Cemetery. Military honors will be presented by the U. S. Air Force.
The family requests that memorials be made to American Lung Association of N. C., Western Regional Office, P.O. Box 2702, Asheville, N. C. 28802.
