Robert married Ruth Polson on August 19, 1938 in Muncie, Indiana. They had four children, each born in a different state. David Eldon was born in Muncie, Indiana, Charles Frederick in Ithaca, NY, John William in Urbana, Illinois, and Janet Sue (Puzey) in Palo Alto, California.

Robert grew up in Muncie, Indiana and received BA and MA degrees from Ball State University. He taught high school math in Mitchell and Griffith, Indiana before that career was interrupted by WW II. He served in the Navy for 4.5 years. Part of that time was spent teaching navigation at Cornell University in Ithaca NY and part was spent on an air craft carrier in the Pacific. After the war he returned to Cornell to earn a PhD. He joined the faculty at the University of Illinois in 1949 and was there until his death.

Robert co-authored eight mathematics text books for junior and senior high school students. He directed student teachers and taught courses on the teaching of mathematics and statistics for teachers. He also administered the Training of Teachers of Teachers (TTT) program in mathematics. He ended his career as coordinator of graduate studies for the College of Education. He was editor of “The Mathematics Teacher” journal and an officer in the National Council of Teachers of Mathematics
