Gordon Alexander "Doc" Rodgers, Jr. of Anniston AL passed away peacefully, at his home in Douglasville, GA on Friday, December 21, 2007 at the age of 92. He was born in Anniston, AL on October 28, 1915. He received a BS degree from Talladega College in 1937. He graduated from Meharry Medical College, School of Dentistry with a Doctor of Dental Surgery, June 1941. He was a veteran of WWII. Dr. Rodgers served as State President of the Alabama NAACP when Rosa Parks was secretary, and during the Montgomery Bus Boycott. He ran for Anniston Public Safety commissioner 1962 and became the first African American elected to the Anniston City Council 1968 serving two consecutive terms. He was a member of the First United Presbyterian Church and was a brother of Omega Psi Phi Fraternity. His passing was preceded by, his wife, Agnes Durrah Rodgers, his sister, Eloise Rodgers Ransom, and his brother, Samuel Ulysses Rodgers. He is survived by his son, Gordon A. Rodgers, III, daughters, Cheryl Rodgers, Dr. Beverly C. Rodgers, Michelle Rodgers Sands, a nephew, Dr Frederic Ransom (Cheryl) of Birmingham, AL and many other relatives. A wake will be held at First United Presbyterian Church from 6-8pm Thursday, December 27. Funeral service is at Haven United Methodist Church Friday, December 28, 2007 at noon.
